JAKARTA – Thousands of protesters in Muslim-majority Indonesia and Malaysia rallied on Friday to condemn the US decision to recognize Al-Quds (Occupied Jerusalem) as Israel’s capital.

”We’re standing here in the name of justice and humanity. We’ve gathered to defend our Palestinian brothers and sisters,” said one rally leader in Jakarta, Reuters reported.

Protesters in Indonesia, mostly clad in white, rallied outside the US embassy in Jakarta. Many of them waved Palestinian flags, while others shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest).

Condemning Trump’s move, some protesters also criticized their government’s poor response to the US decision.

“Jokowi can be tougher and call for a boycott of American products, for instance,” said Yuddy Kurniawan, 30, referring to Indonesian President Joko Widodo by his nickname.

Widodo on Thursday urged the United States to reconsider its decision and instructed his foreign minister to summon the US ambassador for an explanation.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Thursday called on Muslims worldwide to strongly oppose any recognition of Al-Quds as Israel’s capital.

In Kuala Lumpur, leaders from the ruling party United Malay National Organisation and the right-wing Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, both of which represent majority, ethnic-Malay Muslims, led Friday’s rally of several thousand people.

“President, this is an illegal announcement. Jerusalem is an occupied territory,” Minister for Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaluddin said through a loud hailer towards the embassy.

Pakistan’s major Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami, has announced plans for protests in all major cities after Friday prayers
