Television: What it has caused us

.

.

In the name of Allaah, the entirely Merciful, the especially Merciful.

Have you ever thought of a world without television?

Television according to Oxford English Dictionary is a system for transmitting visual images with sound and displaying them electronically on a screen.

.

The television, since invention, had gained entry into people’s homes; the rich and the poor, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. It’s presence in various homes has caused a lot of adverse effects to the society. Television, over the years has developed. Previously, it was  a harmless box standing very close to the wall, which families sit to watch and listen to news, but presently, it has become a monopoly in which the viewer is completely brainwashed, conned and defiled! It has turned to a dangerous cancer eating deep into our religious and social life. .

.

The TV has become an object which is widely used to exhibit nudity and sexual acts in the name of “advertisement and entertainment ” , and by this, the viewers are robbed of their moral sanity, they are made to see women as ordinary sex objects that have no value; they involve in fornication in order to put what they had watched into action. The television now turns our society to an animal kingdom where there is neither complete sanity nor modesty, most people now see fornication as a norm in the society; Almighty Allaah says: …and ye counted it a trifle, while in the sight of Allaah, it is grievous. (An Noor: 15). With the rate in which immoralities are being conveyed to the youth through television, It cannot be overemphasized to say that television takes a king share in the blame of immoralities and crimes that keep flooding the social and moral values in our present society.

.

The TV, seen as an agent of socialization and civilization to many, has crippled the thinking of many people; as they now see actors and actresses as role models that should be looked up to, they imitate everything they see on and in them from their style of dressing to the kind of words they say. Many young men sag their trousers simply because they had seen a celebrity do so on the television and also, many indecent dressings of the present day by ladies are also imitation of television celebrities; is the TV not robbing us of our mental properties?!

.

The rise in youth addiction to television has crippled their love for education, they spend more hours staring at the screen than they spend in the classroom. The TV depicts its celebrities as models for people , most of them are no more interested in education, all they wish is to wake up one day and appear on some screens like the pop stars and actors. Likewise, watching of nudities had decapitated a high percentage of their brains, it was reported that Imam Shaafi'(May Allaah bless him) mistakenly saw a foot of a woman and this caused reduction in his mental ability, what would have happen to the brain of a young man who watched 45 minutes porn video?

.

The television indirectly teaches people about illicit practices like drug addiction , rape, robbery etc. If a hard drug is mentioned on the TV, people who know not about it, many a youngster would go for it just to clear their doubts; the initial intention was to warn them about it, but unfortunately, the end result is always a successful exposure of the young ones to drugs. This is,  as a result of the wrong method used most of the time, hence, advertising it to them. Likewise, crime scenes shown in movies are an easy medium to lure the youths into criminal acts, even when the intention was originally to put them out of crime. Most of the films shine the light of glory on criminal scene and make it look appealing to many unsuspecting young minds. A film will show 95% of its scenes as successful armed robbery operations and make people see the armed robbers as heroes, just the remaining 5% of the scenes will show how he was curbed , who will notice that he was later arrested? They had already built the love of the crime in their hearts. SIt was reported that many prisons were recorded broken around the world after the release of a movie series called ‘Prison Break ‘. … Has the TV brought any good to our future generations?

.

Our children are not spared from the dangers of the beast called television. The TV has the children as its biggest fan. The children copy almost everything they watch on TV, they learn vulgar words and underworld languages from it. Their love for crimes is the reason why most little boys would love to have guns than other toys. Crime and brutal scenes they watch on TV harden their hearts, making them cruel and heartless at tender age. Many children had been caught beating their younger ones mercilessly in the name of practicing to be a  WWE Champion. Is this how the TV will turn our children to criminals? For Allaah says:…and let not your own hands throw you into destruction… (Al Baqara: 195)

.

Also, the growing belief in good witchcraft is among the devilish consequence we earned from TV, many unsuspecting Muslims now see magic, sorcery, and witchcraft as good actions while our creator has made them forbidden. HE says: and the sorcerer thrives not, no matter where he goes.  (At Taha: 69). Many youngsters are found secretly crushing on witches in movies, wanting to be like Harry Potter and Merlin. The TV glorifies and shines positive lights on magic and spell and make them look harmless to the extent that some people may not memorize verses of Allah’s book but they are versed in incantations and spells. Many people have forgotten the Prophet forbids sorcery, saying: Whosoever visits a sorcerer or magician and accepts whatever he (the magician) says has disbelieved in that which I (Muhammad) was sent with (the Holy Quran). but they rather visit the sorcerers and ask them about the knowledge of the unseen. And you still believe that this television of a thing is not a trap of Shaytan?

.

Some of the television viewers find excuses and they claimed that they learn some lessons from actors on TV upon their level of immoralities, we read about them in dailies and we see how wobbled their said perfect lives are. What lesson is to be learnt from people who change their spouse with every change of temperature?! What lesson can we learn from people whose sanctity and conjugal bliss are words without meaning to them?! Isn’t it high time we headed back to the book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the prophet?

.

The addictive influence of TV over its viewers is a serious malady which has reached alarming proportions. Viewers become so addicted to TV that it becomes difficult for them to live without TV. The call to Salaah would be pronounced and people will stay glued to the screen watching football matches, feasting their eyes on the loins of the footballers while the remembrance of Allaah is going on; isn’t it high time we abolished this devilish set that turns people away from the remembrance of Allah?

.

Even when we shun movies and football matches and stick to the news alone, we still see the ‘awrah of female newscasters and Allaah and His Prophet had commanded us to lower our gaze from what is illegal. Allaah says: Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty… (An Noor: 30). We can get updates of current affairs from other medium that we won’t have to gaze on women. It is time we disconnected that destructive tool.

.

Even though, many people had argued that the television can’t be condemned entirely because they believed that they can still find some goodness in it,  Yeah – but not the television we watch now, it will be when the television is meant to suit the life of Muslim. Shaykh Nasruddin Albani said “But the consideration is with regard to the majority (and not the minority). So when a true Muslim state exists that can place programs based on knowledge, which would be beneficial for the ummah, at that point I will not say that television is permissible, but rather I will say that it is obligatory.” Source: Al-Asaalah Magazine, Issue #10.

.

Also regarding the permissibility of the television , Shaykh Muhammad Saalih al-munajjid said “Whoever thinks that this device (TV) can be free of these evils and can be used only for good purposes if it is censored properly is exaggerating and is making a big mistake, because the censor may miss things and most people nowadays want to imitate the foreigners. It is very rare to find censors who are doing their job properly, especially nowadays when most people are only interested in time-wasting entertainment and things that turn people away from true guidance. Reality bears witness to that.”

.

It is incumbent upon us to follow the righteous scholars to have the right view of the religion and the Muslim scholars warned us greatly from the dangers of television; When explaining about the ruling of television in his verdict, Ibn Baaz (rahimahuLlah) said “With regard to television, it is a dangerous device and its harmful effects are very great, like those of the cinema, or even worse. We know from the research that has been written about it and from the words of experts in Arab countries and elsewhere enough to indicate that it is dangerous and very harmful to Islamic beliefs (aqeedah), morals and the state of society. This is because it includes the presentation of bad morals, tempting scenes, immoral pictures, semi-nakedness, destructive speech, and Kufr. It encourages imitation of their conduct and ways of dressing, respect for their leaders, neglect of Islamic conduct and ways of dressing, and looking down on the scholars and heroes of Islam. It damages their image by portraying them in an off-putting manner that makes people despise them and ignore them. It shows people how to cheat, steal, hatch plots and commit acts of violence against others. Undoubtedly anything that produces so many bad results should be stopped and shunned, and we have to close all the doors that could lead to it. If some of our brothers denounce it and speak out against it, we cannot blame them, because this is a part of sincerity towards Allaah and towards other people.” Fataawah 3/227
.

The best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad S. A. W. With the above demerits of television we have explained, it is obvious the TV set has nothing praiseworthy to offer, so why still keep it in our homes. The television is more dangerous to a society than what a genocide can cause them, because genocide can only destroy the existing people, but the TV will destroy both the existing and their future generations.

.

How long will we continue to allow TV set to keep destroying our society?! For how long?! And how much longer?!

.

May Allah ease our affairs.
